Sangerville, Maine - Irving Vance McNaughton, 91, died peacefully December 19, 2025, in Dover-Foxcroft. Irving was born September 8, 1934, in North Berwick, Maine, son of Vance Leonard McNaughton and Mildred M. (Marston) McNaughton.
Irving grew up in various towns in Maine, where his mother was an educator and his father was Superintendent of Schools. Irving spent much of his youth in Sangerville on his grandfather's family farm. His parents built one of the first camps on Center Pond. Irving graduated from Newport High School in 1952 and University of Maine in 1956, with a civil engineering degree. He worked for the State of Maine and Great Northern Paper Company prior to becoming an entrepreneur as a surveyor. Irving spent most of his working career buying and selling woodlands and managing wood harvesting crews. Irving loved to deer hunt and ride his Arabian horses in highly competitive long distance trail rides. He traveled up and down the East coast and spent many of his retirement years in Florida for winter competitions. He enjoyed dogs, history, telling stories and arguing. Many hours were spent in Sangerville town politics, where he was a member of selectboard and planning boards.
Irving is survived by his five sons, Vance L. McNaughton and wife, Jane, of Ripley, Ralph C.S. McNaughton and wife, Diana, of Corinna, Bruce E. McNaughton of Sangerville, Clark I. McNaughton and wife, Karen, of Charleston, and Brett C. McNaughton and wife, Jenny, of Hodgenville, Kentucky; and 8 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to express their appreciation for the care provided by Hibbard Nursing Home. Spring committal service will be held at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Dexter.
