Joann Bennett

Zephyrhills, FL - After bravely battling a long illness, Joann Bennett passed away peacefully at her home in Zephyrhills, FL on July 7th, 2019. She was 86 years of age.
Born with her identical twin sister, Joyce, in Abbot, Maine on a cold New Year's Eve, December 31, 1932, Joann lived her childhood there and attended the one room school house in Upper Abbot, where it still stands today. She was a life long member of the Abbot Historical Society.
Starting in 1946, Joann attended Good Will-Hinckley Home-School-Farm in Hinckley, ME and lived on campus with Joyce primarily in Grange Cottage. Joann graduated from Averill High School at Hinckley in 1952. Joann, like many of her classmates, was extremely fond of Good Will-Hinckley, often making donations to the school. She enjoyed attending the annual Kum Bak weekend events in August and catching up with old friends and classmates anytime she was able.
After graduation, Joann received her LPN Degree at Booth Memorial Hospital, Brookline, MA in 1954.
For 6 years, Joann served in the Navy Hospital Corps where she enjoyed being an x-ray technician. After her service, she retired from the US Navy in 1984 as an USNR HM1 (Hospital Corpsman First Class). She went on to earn her Associate Degree in Science at Manchester Community College in Manchester, CT, then lived and worked for many years as a an x-ray technician in Hartford, CT.
Living her later years in Zephyrhills and summers near Piper Pond in Abbot, ME, Joann was an avid fan of UCONN Women's Basketball and of watching all sports in general. She was a fierce competitor at dominos and just about any card game. Another one of her favorite pastimes was inviting Betmar Acres friends over to gather around her antique player piano to sing, play instruments and enjoy an evening of laughter and great live music.
Joann was predeceased by her mother Norma L (Brown) Bennett, father Alvarus F. Bennett, sister Barbara (Bennett) Philips, niece Diane Paulk and nephew William Bernier.
She is survived by her twin sister, Joyce (Bennett) Eggleston of Zephyrhills, sister Kathryn (Bennett) Bernier and brother-n-law, Donald Bernier of Winter Haven, FL, as well as her nieces and nephews: Elizabeth, Kathryn, Evelyn, Donald, Michael and Cheryl
A Celebration of Life Memorial will be held October 12, 2019 at the Betmar Acres Clubhouse #3, 5512 Apache Street, Zephyrhills, FL at 2:00 PM. All are welcome to attend.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Joann's memory to Good Will-Hinckley School, 16 Prescott Dr. P.O. Box 159, Hinckley, ME 04944

My most memorable Tuesday coffee at Betmar was the one where I meet my two favorite Betmar people. Darrell and I had many good game nights at their house. Joann was her own person and had some good one liner sayings. she gave that cancer a good fight. I enjoyed the player piano especially the State of Maine song. I grew to Love both of you girls and both hold a special place in my heart.,,,
