Patricia L. Wiles Obituary

West Simsbury, CT, Connecticut - Patricia Lucille Dewey Wiles, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 91, on February 27, 2026. Born in her family home on Massaco St. in Simsbury, CT, on August 13, 1934, she remained a proud, lifelong resident of Simsbury.

A child of the Depression and a steadfast frugal Yankee, she believed in washing tin foil and hanging it on the line to dry, reusing bread bags and keeping boxes of used twist ties and elastic bands close at hand. Her creativity with her sewing machine and the homemade Halloween costumes will be greatly missed.

Pat loved the outdoors, especially gardening. Her car was always ready with a pair of scissors and a trowel in case she spotted any flora or fauna that might need a new home. She grew up as her father's tom boy and passed on her passions to her children and grandchildren: playing in mud puddles, baiting a hook, playing pond hockey, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, brook stomping and whitewater rafting. Her kitchen was central to family life: homemade birthday cakes, whoopie pies, scones, yeast rolls, homemade pies of all kinds, Chex mix, lumpa toast, chicken divan, strawberry shortcake, flapjacks, and Jello salad in a penguin ice bucket.

Pat played field hockey at Simsbury High and graduated from Sargent College with a degree in physical therapy where she met John on a blind date. She spent her professional years working and rehabbing the elderly, a job that she loved. She was a fiercely competitive woman who loved sports, croquet, card games and dominos. She was a proud member of The DAR and loved spending time with her Home Arts friends, and her paddle tennis and bridge groups. Above all, she cherished her time with her husband, children and grandchildren - especially in the summer at the cottage, Happy H'ours and Dew Drop Inn, named after her, on Sebec Lake, Maine.

At 91, she leaves behind a legacy of strength, practicality, and adventure - equal parts spice cake and steel backbone. She taught us to reuse, to repair, to paddle forward, to compete hard, to scoop ice cream generously, and to never tear the Christmas wrapping paper: "we can re-use that."

She is survived by her husband of 69 years, John Wiles of West Simsbury; her son, Mark Wiles and daughter-in-law, Julie Wiles of Canton, CT; her daughter, Gail Wiles and son-in-law, Scott Trafton of Cumberland, ME; grandchildren, Zachary Wiles of Boise, ID, Cameron Keefe of all over the world, Griffin Wiles of Hartford, CT, and Dain Trafton and Finn Trafton, both of Cumberland, ME; and numerous extended family members in Arizona, Florida, and Maine. She was predeceased by her son, Bruce, in 1993.

Public memorial services will be held on Friday, April 10, at 11 a.m. at Simsbury United Methodist Church, 709 Hopmeadow St., Simsbury, CT, followed by a celebration of her life at the Maple Tree Café, 781 Hopmeadow St., Simsbury, CT. Interment will be in the summer at Gray Cemetery in Dover-Foxcroft, ME. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to The Alzheimer's Association, donorservices.alz.org or to the American Cancer Society, cancer.org. Wiles Remembrance Center of Farmington, ME, is honored to be caring for services with the assistance of Vincent Funeral Home, Simsbury. Condolences, memories, and a memorial video may be shared in her Book of Memories, where services will be livestreamed, at wilesrc.com.
