Philip James Mitchell Obituary

Medway, Maine - Philip James Mitchell, 83, of Medway, passed away in Bangor, on March 14, 2026. He was born on January 8, 1943, in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, the son of Maynard and Dorothy (McDermott) Mitchell.

Phil attended schools in Lincoln, Hampden, and Dover-Foxcroft and was a proud 1962 graduate of Foxcroft Academy. He was a veteran of both the Maine National Guard and the United States Army. He was stationed in Kanghwa-do, South Korea, with the Army Security Agency and kept in touch with his fellow ASA Mountain Men until his death. He was honorably discharged as First Sergeant in 1965, decorated with the Korean Defense Service Medal. "Mitch" worked at Great Northern Paper Company in East Millinocket as a pipe fitter for more than 40 years. He was well-known for that trademark handlebar mustache.

Philip is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ruth (Snowman) Mitchell of Medway; his sisters, Gail (Mitchell) Rosenbaum and Brenda (Mitchell) Lingley; his two daughters, Julie (Mitchell) Hale and Michelle (Mitchell) Ostertag. He leaves four grandchildren, Christopher Mitchell, Brianna Murchison, Garrett Hale and husband, John Polanco, and Catherine Hale. He was predeceased by his parents, Maynard and Lorraine (Osgood) Mitchell and Lloyd and Dorothy (McDermott) Pratt; and his grandparents, John and Elsie (Davis) McDermott and Lester and Edith (Perkins) Mitchell.

Burial will be with Military Funeral Honors at Grindstone Cemetery in Medway at a later date this summer.
